The Ontario Physiotherapy Association (OPA) invites the submission of abstracts related to original academic research, clinical research, systematic and scoping reviews, and innovative special interest projects for our annual conference, InterACTION 2024 on March 22-23, 2024 in Toronto.
OPA is committed to championing equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigeneity within our educational content and selection processes. We welcome people from diverse communities, including those that have historically been marginalized and underrepresented (e.g., Black, racialized/visible minorities, and Indigenous people; persons with disabilities; and 2SLGBTQIA+ persons), to submit abstracts for research and special interest projects. Furthermore, we encourage submissions that address or consider equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigeneity within the physiotherapy profession and the populations in which we serve.
Abstracts should be related to one of the following themes:
Health Justice– Advancing Health Equity
- Health equity means that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be healthier.
- This theme includes considering obstacles to healthcare (e.g., poverty, racism, discrimination, powerlessness, lack of access to jobs, quality education, housing, safe environments), and strategies designed to address them.
- Topics may include: Indigenous health, allyship, addressing unconscious bias, advocacy, strategies to achieve health equity, and examining inequities in healthcare access, treatment and outcomes.
Innovation and/or Innovative Practices
- This theme includes novel approaches or changes made to the way care is provided or how work is accomplished through technology, teamwork, etc.
- Topics may include: collaborative learning models, integrated care models, use of technology such as virtual care, new models of practice, and new roles.
Health Systems Transformation
- This theme includes content related to systems approaches that support evidence-informed care, accountability, and integration with the goal of a creating a sustainable, patient-centered system with improved health outcomes.
- Topics may include: Ontario Health Teams; crisis, risk or change management; pandemic preparedness; funding models; quality indicators; program evaluation and best practices.
Clinical Research/Best Practices
- This theme includes content related to evidence-informed approaches to care and practice examined using quantitative, qualitative, or mixed method designs.
- Topics may include: original research, systematic reviews, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Professional Leadership/Education
- This theme includes content related to business practices, professionalism, entry-level or post-graduate education.
- Topics may include: licensure and transition to practice, student learning and teaching, mentorship and practice/business management.
Other

GENERAL INFORMATION
Only abstracts for research or projects completed by the time of submission will be considered.
Research sessions can include presentation slides and an oral presentation of 10-15 minutes. Session time should include a question-and-answer period.
Submitted abstracts need to include information indicated on the sections in these forms: Original Research form, Special Interest Report form.
Those submitting an abstract will be required to declare any real or perceived conflict of interest and to provide details if necessary. Abstracts that appear to be selling a specific product or are considered to be marketing-related will not be accepted.
All abstracts are to be submitted online. Each section of the online form must be completed before the abstract can be submitted.
Deadline for submissions is Sunday, October 1, 2023.
IF YOUR ABSTRACT IS ACCEPTED
The slide deck must cover the same content as described in the abstract.
All accepted abstracts will be presented in-person. Details to follow.
No honorarium, fees or payment of expenses will be paid to the presenters of accepted abstracts.
SUBMISSION CATEGORIES
Original Research
This pertains to original scientific data collected by the author(s). Reports must be based upon work already completed. Any established research procedure may be used (e.g., clinical trials, descriptive studies, single-subject designs, qualitative methods, meta-analysis, program evaluation, systematic and scoping reviews, clinical practice guidelines, etc.).
Abstracts for studies which are ‘in progress’ or for which data acquisition and analysis are incomplete or absent will not be accepted.
Special Interest Reports
This category is for information about new or unique methods, materials and/ programs or principles developed, used and evaluated by the author(s) OR descriptions of innovative ways in which established methods have been adapted and evaluated to meet the special needs of physical therapy practice or education. Submissions should include relevant evidence when possible.
