Brief Description

This 2-day course is designed to provide participants with the tools to assess and treat the myofascial system of the Upper Quadrant. This evidence informed course will outline how to identify and treat fascial restrictions. The techniques demonstrated are derived from manual therapy for the fascia (Mobilization of the Myofascial System (MMS). This approach will allow participants to appreciate the implications that myofascial system dysfunctions can have on joint amplitude, motor control, neurophysiology and overall client functioning.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the anatomy and physiology of the myofascial system to a treatment approach for the myofascial body

  • Understand the concepts of treatment for MMS and how this approach may be integrated into the other methods normally used by manual therapists

  • Apply techniques for assessing and improving the mobility of the myofascial system for the Upper Quadrant, including the following areas:  cervical spine both posteriorly and anteriorly; cervico-thoracic region; cranio-vertebral region, in relation to the superficial front line and the posterior line; TMJ muscles in relation to the lateral line of fascia  and the deep front line of fascia; clavicular region; upper extremity; hyoid region; and in relation to the ULNT's

  • Use this treatment approach safely

Prerequisite Online Course

This 5-hour on-line course is designed to provide participants with the theoretical portion of Mobilization of the Myofascial System (MMS).

You will learn:

  • The definition and anatomy of the fascia, including Tom Myers’ lines of fascia, described in his book entitled “Anatomy Trains”

  • Roles of the myofascial system.

  • Pathophysiology of the fascial system

  • Indications / Contra-indications for treatment with MMS

  • How we can change the fascia

  • Evidence-based research on fascia

N.B. Completion of this course will allow you to enroll in either the Upper Quadrant MMS course or the Lower Quadrant MMS Quadrant course. The techniques demonstrated in the Quadrant practical courses have their origins in manual therapy for fascia (MMS).
