Looking to Advance Your Practice?

The Advanced Health Care Practice (AHCP) Program at Western University is a one-year, course-based master’s program (MClSc or MHSc) designed for clinicians seeking advanced clinical training and leadership skills while working.

Applications close August 1 2024 for September 2024 and reopen November 1 2024 for September 2025 | ahcp@uwo.ca.

The AHCP program offers eight specialized fields:

Sport and Exercise Medicine (Hybrid)

  • Overview: This program prepares physiotherapists and physicians in the pillars of advanced practice to deliver advanced clinical care in sport injury and exercise medicine environments. Gain specialized training in sport and exercise medicine, including credentials such as Sport First Responder and Stop the Bleed certification. Covers competencies for IFSPT and SPC.
  • Ideal for: Physiotherapists, advanced standing physiotherapists (SPC Diploma holders), and physicians preparing for the CASEM Diploma.

Upper Extremity Rehabilitation (Online)

  • Overview: This program prepares Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists for enhanced specialty care in upper extremity rehabilitation, aligned with the Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) exam. Includes online coursework and clinical mentorship.
  • Ideal for: Physiotherapists and occupational therapists seeking specializing in upper extremity rehabilitation.

Comprehensive Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (Hybrid)

  • Overview: This program offers advanced practice education in orthopaedic physiotherapy for experienced clinicians. Through advanced evidence informed clinical reasoning skills, learners will differentially diagnose, assess and manage musculoskeletal clients and if indicated learn manipulative therapy skills, and how and when to best apply them.
  • Ideal for: Physiotherapists aiming for advanced clinical practice in musculoskeletal health, who seek to earn their FCAMPT, an advanced degree, and research experience.

Wound Healing (Hybrid)

  • Overview: This program provides an advanced education in wound care to health professionals including but not limited to physical therapists, nurses, chiropodists  and occupational therapists.
  • Ideal for: Nurses, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals specializing in wound care who seek to produce a publication-ready scientific paper.

Interdisciplinary Pain Management (Online)

  • Overview: As the only master's-level degree option for pain management in Canada, this innovative program blends the critical academic competencies expected of graduate students, with real-world practical skills and expertise to enhance their clinical, policy, or advocacy approaches to pain management.
  • Ideal for: Physical Therapists seeking interdisciplinary specialization in pain management.

Clinical Epidemiology and Research Management (Hybrid)

  • Overview: Develop skills in clinical research methods, biostatistics, critical appraisal, and grant writing.
  • Ideal for: Physical Therapists with more than 2 years of experience in clinical practice who seek competence as a clinical research leader capable of building and maintaining quality research teams whose outputs contribute to evidence-informed decision making.

Health Equity and Sustainability (MHSc Online)

  • Overview: This program is grounded in principles of equity and justice, and  addresses environmental, socio-economic, and political factors that shape health across the life course and develops current and future health leaders and global citizens.
  • Ideal for: Physical Therapists interested in building and championing sustainable health solutions within their professional scope of practice, or as representative of their field within policy-making.

Applied Health Sciences (MHSc Online)

  • Overview: This program aims to promote leaders in health through foundations of universal health promotion and health education, evidence-informed health interventions and efficient and effective supports for individuals throughout the lifespan.
  • Ideal for: Physical Therapists seeking to bolster their competencies in Interprofessional Collaboration, Self-Awareness and Reflexivity, Critical Reasoning and Creative Problem-Solving, Evidence-Based Leadership and Systems Thinking and Applied Expertise.
