Brief Description

This course is tailored to healthcare providers, including physiotherapists, chiropractors, occupational therapists, athletic therapists, and physicians who possess a foundational understanding of acute concussion assessment, treatment, and clinical guidelines through our Level 1 course. This specialized course aims to equip participants with advanced knowledge and skills in managing persistent concussion cases. Through in-depth clinical concepts, case studies, and evidence-based research, healthcare professionals will gain valuable insights into the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients experiencing prolonged concussion symptoms. The course will delve into the challenges posed by persistent cases, exploring innovative therapeutic approaches and multidisciplinary collaborations to optimize patient outcomes.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the characteristics of persistent concussion cases and differentiate them from typical concussion recoveries.
  2. Utilize advanced assessment techniques to identify contributing factors to persistent symptoms.
  3. Formulate comprehensive and individualized treatment plans for patients with prolonged concussion symptoms.
  4. Apply evidence-based interventions for persistent concussion cases (including functional vestibular-ocular therapy, sensorimotor retraining, aerobic exercise programming)
  5. Evaluate the role of multidisciplinary teams in managing complex concussion cases.
  6. Understand the influence of psychological factors in persistent concussion symptomology.
  7. Analyze the impact of lifestyle and environmental factors on concussion recovery.
  8. Implement strategies to address sleep disturbances and manage fatigue in persistent cases.
  9. Explore emerging treatment modalities and technologies for persistent concussion patients.
  10. Foster effective communication and collaboration with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals.
  11. Identify potential red flags for more severe underlying pathologies and implement appropriate referral processes.
  12. Develop comprehensive return-to-play and return-to-learn protocols for persistent concussion patients.
